Firefighters get a 5 percent pay hike under a one-year contract given preliminary approval by the San Diego City Council.

Firefighters get a 5 percent pay hike under a one-year contract given preliminary approval by the San Diego City Council.

San Diego firefighters haven't gotten a raise in four years.

The contract approved by a 7-1 vote on Monday still needs a second vote of the council. It calls for a 3 percent salary increase on July 1 and a 2 percent increase Sept. 1.
