SD County and California Reject More Community College Funding

Proposition 92 would have created a separate stream of funding for community colleges.

But many teachers union leaders rallied against the measure. They believe the proposed funding system would take money away from state public schools. They say the state can't afford to earmark billions for community colleges.

But San Diego City College president Terry Burgess says expect the issue to come back. He says the community college system needs its own pot of education funding.

Burgess : There is certainly going to be a lot of discussion up and down the state about how we might approach this structural problem in the future, and maybe come back with another solution. I can't say that it will be a statewide initiative. It might be getting a legislator to sponsor some legislation to address that.

Burgess points out California's community college system is the most poorly-funding community college system in the country.
