Imperial Beach Gets Makeover

Crews have broken ground on an Imperial Beach project that will help keep polluted stormwater from reaching the ocean. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

The $2.8 Million Palm Avenue Improvement Project will create a park-like setting with a turnaround where the street ends at the oceanfront.

Marguerite Elicone with the Port of San Diego says a pollution diversion system is another part of the project.

Elicone: We're installing a new storm water pump station so that urban runoff will be diverted into the pump station instead of running onto the beach and polluting the beach.

The system could potentially reduce the number of days the beach is closed because of pollution.

The site will also feature an 18-foot tall bronze sculpture of a surfer and his longboard and a beach overlook with benches.

Money for the project comes from the Port, the City of Imperial Beach and the state. The Palm Avenue upgrades should be complete by the end of this year.
