14 Dead in Tijuana Breaks Uneasy Calm

At least 14 people were murdered in Tijuana this weekend, including six charred bodies found this morning. KPB-S reporter Amy Isackson has details from Tijuana.

Police found six burnt bodies in a vacant lot in the eastern part of the city this morning. Police say one blackened corpse was still on fire when they arrived shortly after dawn.

The killings break an uneasy calm that had fallen over the city since a bloody drug cartel shootout at the end of April. Baja California's assistant attorney general, Salvador Juan Ortiz Morales, says two bodies had plastic bags over their heads, one was handcuffed and the others had their wrists duck taped together.

Ortiz Morales suspects 10 of this weekends dead could be tied to organized crime. State law enforcement officials say 272 people have been murdered in Tijuana so far this year as drug cartels duke it out to control the city and as Mexican law enforcement continues its crackdown.

This year's homicide count so far is just 65 shy of last year's total.
