Coastal Commission Postpones Navy Broadway Hearing

The Navy faces more delays in its effort to develop its new Headquarters on San Diego Bay. The California Coastal Commission has postponed for a second time its hearings on the ambitious project. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more

The Broadway Complex Project is the first time the Navy has dipped a toe into the choppy waters of commercial redevelopment. The Coastal Commission has not yet signed off on the plan to build a new Navy Headquarters, paid for by surrounding high rise hotels, to be built by developer Doug Manchester
Coastal Commission attorney Chris Peters says his agency has postponed its August hearing on the project, because of a recent federal ruling.

Peters : The Navy will have to provide additional public notice for public comment and at this point we don’t know what the outcome of that process will be, so it would be premature to hold a hearing at this point.

Captain Matt Brown of Navy Region Southwest, says the Navy has no time- line for public hearings, but officials in Washington DC have committed to fully comply with the ruling.

Brown:  We will provide the public with further opportunity to weigh in with their view on environmental considerations relating to the redevelopment of the Navy’s Broadway Complex here at Broadway and Harbor Drive.

The Navy has claimed the lease the city signed in 1992 gave them the right to go ahead without any more environmental review It’s still unclear if more public hearings will change that.
