San Diego's Living Wage Ordinance Enforced

San Diego’s city attorney has won the first case against a company for violating the city’s Living Wage Ordinance. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

City attorney Mike Aguirre held a press conference on front of the Convention Center where the Presidential candidates are addressing the National Conference of La Rasa this week. He says 26 Latino workers, employees of a company that laundered city uniforms, benefitted from the ruling. The city’s Living Wage Ordinance, passed in 2005, requires contractors to pay employees $12 an hour, or $10  plus health insurance.

Aguirre:  This uniform company, the Prudential company, failed to do that, and every one of the workers happens to be Latino. We’re recovering all of the lost living wages, so people will be recovering between $650 all the way up to $2,000 a person.

The company also has to pay a penalty of  $20,000  Aguirre says that money will help pay for future enforcement of the Living Wage Law.
