A controversial initiative has qualified for the November ballot that would create 97 acres of new waterfront property along San Diego Bay. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
A pair of San Diego developers wants to build a second story deck over San Diego’s Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal. They would then lease the space above the docks for new developments on the scenic bay front property .
Nancy Chase is a consultant to Community Solutions LLC , which paid to collect the signatures to qualify the measure for the ballot.
CHASE : They have experience in developing projects using the initiative process for projects that are controversial and difficult for elected officials to make a decision about.
The San Diego Port District manages the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal. It is adamantly opposed to the idea. But under state law, the Port will have to pay the hundreds of thousands of dollars it will cost to put the measure on the ballot this Fall. Alison St John, KPBS news
