Comic-Con Comes to Town

This is the week that comic book fans and film buffs start descending on San Diego for Comic Con , the world’s largest comic book and popular arts festival. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more on the projected economic impact of Comic Con, which opens on Thursday.

By now, San Diegans are used to seeing Klingons on the trolley and Cat Woman coming down the elevator when Comic Con arrives in town. If you don’t already have a ticket, it’s too late to get inside the Convention Center where the action is - all four days are sold out.

Steven Johnson of the Convention Center says hotels are typically 98 % full.

Johnson : It is the single highest occupancy rate throughout the entire year is the weekend of Comic Con, so we know it’s a huge driver of overnight stays and hotel rooms, not only in the downtown core but throughout San Diego County.

Johnson says about 80 % of those who come to Comic Con are Californians, 16% come from other states and 2% from abroad. Many of them have been coming for years.

No one really knows the full economic impact on San Diego, but Johnson says it’s well over $40 million  He says Comic Con is a good balance to the more serious Convention Center gatherings, like Biocom, and advertises San Diego as a place where cutting edge, contemporary culture thrives.

Watch out for cartoon characters on your commute, starting any day.
