Group Has Plan For Stable Water Supply

A report says California can solve its water crisis and restore its struggling salmon fishery at the same time. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

The Environmental Defense Fund report makes six recommendations it says will create a stable water supply and salmon fishery.

The pumping of water from streams and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is linked to the decline of some fish species.

The balancing act of having enough water for people and fish has limited supply for both.

The EDF's Cynthia Koehler says there's a way to end that cycle.

Koehler: The main thing that we really haven't had yet in all of these efforts to address the Delta problems are appropriate flows for fisheries. That really has not yet happened in a way that allows us to get to a sustainable level.

She says providing a more reliable water supply for the San Francisco Bay Delta Estuary could help save fish, including salmon.

Koehler also says that would help ensure adequate water for farms, cities, and the 25 million Californians who rely on the Bay-Delta's water.

San Diego gets about one-third of its supply from the Delta.
