Post-Scandal, UCSD Close to Choosing New Preuss School Principal

UC San Diego officials are getting ready to pick a new principal for the university's Preuss Charter School. The former principal resigned earlier this year amid a grade tampering scandal. KPBS report

UC San Diego officials are getting ready to pick a new principal for the university's Preuss Charter School. The former principal resigned earlier this year amid a grade tampering scandal. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.

University officials believe hiring a new leader is one way to restore Preuss' integrity and get it back on track.

Former principal Doris Alvarez resigned in December after a university audit found she probably directed or knew about more than 400 inappropriate grade changes.

The university is conducting a national search for a new leader and has four finalists. Preuss’ Peter Gourevitch says there's a lot on the line.

Gourevitch : Of course we’re concerned. Whenever you have bad publicity, which I think we got, you don't like it. Certainly that’s going to be a challenge for the board and the school. And we have to deal with that.

A team of private consultants have also been hired to help implement reforms. Their first campus visit was last week. Also in the works is a new system that will better manage grades and track grade changes.
