Oceanside officials have approved what would be one of the largest developments ever in that city's downtown.

Oceanside officials have approved what would be one of the largest developments ever in that city's downtown.

City Council members on Wednesday night voted 3-1 in favor of CityMark Development's proposal to put 231 condominiums, 48,000 square feet of retail space plus a public plaza on five blocks. A hotel also could be part of the project.

Officials expect the development will generate millions of dollars annually in tax revenue.

Council woman Esther Sanchez cast the lone dissenting vote. She objected to the amount of residential units and street-level parking, saying she wanted something more like San Diego's famed Gaslamp District.

A CityMark official said construction is expected to start in 2009 and take about two years.
