Sixth Annual Home Movie Day

Home Movies are the featured attraction at UCSD's annual event (Home Movie Day)

UCSD celebrates the 6th Anniversary of International Home Movie Day on Saturday October 18 with a free screening at the Geisel Library in the Seuss Room at UCSD in La Jolla from 2:00 to 5:00pm. This bring-your-own-film event (f drop-off begins at 1:00pm) highlights home movies like yours as well as the works of historic amateurs.

Lia Friedman, the event organizer, says, "This is our third home movie day, and it's an event that is near and dear to me. Home movies are mystery, memory, nostalgia and history all contained on a tiny reel -- invaluable snippets of time that can be shared generation after generation. I love the home movies I have of my mother and her parents and extended family, and the titles on the reels -- 'x-mas 1955' 'lake trip 1956' -- that seem so simple, yet when viewed give me the gift of being able to experience it as if I had been there."

Home Movie Day reveals how home movies offer a unique window on the past and are a part of personal, community and cultural history. So just come to watch or bring one of your own Super 8 , 8mm or 16 mm films to share. There will also be films from the UCSD Film and Video Collection.

And if you're still not convinced, maybe Martin Scorsese can offer some persuasion: "Home movies do not just capture the important private moments of our family's lives, but they are historical and cultural documents as well. Consider Abraham Zapruder's 8mm film that recorded the assassination of President Kennedy or Nickolas Muray's famously vibrant color footage of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera shot with his 16mm camera. Imagine how different our view of history would be without these precious films. Home Movie Day is a celebration of these films and the people who shot them. I urge anyone with an interest in learning more about how to care for and preserve their own personal memories to join in the festivities being offered in their community..."
