Californians Still Fighting the Battle of the Bulge

A new report from the U-C-L-A Center for Health Policy Research reveals more than half of all California adults are overweight or obese. The report is based on a survey of more than 140-thousand people. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

UCLA researchers say there's been virtually no change in the level of obesity since their last statewide survey two years ago.

Sue Holtby is the lead author of this year's report. She says the survey reveals most Californians say their doctor isn't paying much attention to the problem.

Sue Holtby: Even though over 80 percent had visited a doctor in the past year, only about a third said that their doctor discussed healthy eating and exercise with them.

Holtby thinks that's due in part because insurance companies don't reimburse doctors for talking about how to prevent obesity. And she says most of time, patients don't bring it up, either.
