Labor Council City Attorney Endorsement

The Labor Council of San Diego and Imperial Counties has decided to withhold its endorsement for both  candidates in the San Diego city attorney’s race.  KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

The Labor Council, the umbrella organization for 124 labor unions, has decided neither Mike Aguirre nor Jan Goldsmith will get their backing.

The Council’s Lorena Gonzales says Jan Goldsmith took an anti -worker position in bills he voted on when he was a California Assemblyman.

Gonzales : And specifically authored legislation to try to do away with prevailing wage, which sets the standard for livable wage for our construction industry.

Goldsmith says he wont take a position on policy as city attorney.

Mike Aguirre lost the support of city labor groups because he’s fighting to roll back pension benefits. But Gonzales says there’s another reason labor groups chose not to back him. She says people who’ve worked in his office complain about how they were treated.

Gonzales:  So I think we’re very uncomfortable with his treatment of his direct workers .

Aguirre has fought legal battles on behalf of labor groups like the farm workers in the past, but says his primary duty as city attorney is to San Diego residents.
