People who want to cross the border more quickly on foot have a new option. Federal officials opened a new fast-pass lane for pedestrians at San Ysidro. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.
The fast-pass or Sentri lane is now open from six in the morning until 10 in the evening.
Participants have to pass a background check and submit fingerprints. They also have to have an in-peron interview and pay 122-dollars.
Angelica DeCima is with Customs and Border Protection. She says the application process takes about six weeks. People then get a Sentri card. They can walk to the front of the line of people waiting to cross the border and jump into the Sentri lane.
Angelica DeCima: Between six and eight that's when we got the bulk of our pedestrians coming through that Sentri lane. There was no wait. Basically, people walked up, showed the card, and they were on their way.
However, that was not so in the Sentri vehicle lanes this morning. A computer glitch meant some drivers waited an hour and fifteen minutes to cross.
DeCima says they're working to fix the problem.
The computers were installed Monday.
