Governor and Others Looking to Lawmakers to Creat Better Budget

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says he'll meet with legislative leaders today to discuss the budget.

The Governor said Tuesday he would veto a budget plan lawmakers approved. Leaders said they in turn would override that veto.

But, some representatives of education and health care groups are cautioning lawmakers against that action. They say a veto is an opportunity to come up with a better spending plan.

Mike Herald is with the Western Center on Law and Poverty.

Herald: We're taking cost of living adjustments for blind, aged and disabled persons who have no other way to earn money, we're taking money from poor families who depend on the Cal Works welfare program. That's who is getting hurt in this budget…

State legislative leaders said it was time to end the suffering for those affected by the nearly three-month long budget stalemate.
