Right now there are five South Bay school districts. The variety of school offerings results in parents sending their kids to separate districts. But that creates logistical nightmares for schools when parents drop their kids off late or prolong their family vacations.

Karen Janney is with the Sweetwater Union High School District . She says a common calendar will unify the South Bay. She also says students will do better on state exams.

Janney: There is a three to four week break right before California state testing. That doesn't maximize instruction.

Janney says more kids in class at the same time also means more state funding for the districts. All five school boards will have to vote on the calendar. If approved, the school year would begin in late July.
