The full San Diego city council will consider whether to move forward with a new downtown library Tuesday.

The council will consider whether to allow the Mayor to sign off on a letter of intent allowing the San Diego Unified School district to lease two floors of a proposed new downtown library. The school district would use the floors for a charter high school. The 2nd District’s Kevin Faulconer says he expects a lot of questions before the council takes action.

“There’s been money pledged for the project, there’s been money set aside from the redevelopment arm,” he says. “But there’s still a short fall and it’s very important that, if the downtown library’s to be a reality, it can not have a negative impact on the general fund or any new taxes.”

The library carries an estimated $184 million price tag. But Faulconer says the true cost won’t be known until the project is put out to bid which will only happen if it’s ultimately approved.
