Student Stabbed At San Diego High School

— A fight between two Crawford High School students escalated today into a stabbing that left one of the girls hospitalized and the other under arrest, authorities reported.

The fracas at the El Cerrito-area campus erupted for unknown reasons about 1 p.m., while classes were still in session, said Jack Brandais, a spokesman for San Diego Unified School District.

Campus police took the alleged assailant into custody, Brandais said. Medics took the injured teen to an emergency room for treatment of an apparently non-life-threatening laceration to her neck.

Under the school district's "zero tolerance" weapons policy, the suspect will face an automatic recommendation for expulsion. Police will forward the results of their investigation to the county District Attorney's Office for possible filing of criminal charges.

Brandais declined to release the girls' ages and grade levels, citing SDUSD privacy rules.
