Small Early Morning Earthquakes Near Julian Shake San Diego's East County

JULIAN — A rash of small earthquakes, centered near Julian, rattled East County Saturday.

All of the quakes had an estimated epicenter of about 10 miles east-southeast of Julian.

The largest two were both recorded with a magnitude of 3.2. They struck at 3:36 and 7:10 a.m. and were reported to be felt by people in Santee, Alpine, Julian and Pine Valley.

Three other microquakes, with magnitudes between 1.2 and 1.7, also apparently rattled the area.

The reports came from automated seismographs and computerized data analysis systems operated by the Southern California Earthquake Center. By early morning, no human had reviewed the reports, making them subject to later change.
