This map of San Diego County shows wind speeds at 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 14, 2015.

The wind and rain eased up Monday morning as a cold front headed out of the region, but frost could develop in parts of San Diego County Monday night and cooler weather and high surf are in the forecast through Tuesday.

Between Sunday night and 9:30 a.m. Monday, automated gauges recorded 1.25 inches of rain at Birch Hill; 1.04 inches of rain on Palomar Mountain; .83 of an inch at Lake Cuyamaca; .76 an inch in Pine Hills; .67 of an inch in Julian; .61 of an inch in Descanso; .52 of an inch in Santa Ysabel; .51 of an inch at Henshaw Dam; .50 of an inch on Volcan Mountain; and less than half an inch elsewhere.

Traces of snow were reported on Mount Laguna and Palomar Mountain, according to the National Weather Service.

Peak wind gusts recorded between Sunday evening and Monday morning were 71 mph at Volcan Mountain; 60 mph on Palomar Mountain; 59 mph in Borrego Springs and Harrison Park; 55 mph in Boulevard and Ocotillo Wells; 54 mph in Carlsbad; 50 mph in In-Koh-Pah; 47 mph in Del Mar and on Mateo Ridge; 46 mph at Silver Strand Beach; and 45 mph on Otay Mountain. Gusts of less than 45 mph were noted in numerous other areas.

An NWS high wind warning was initially scheduled to remain in effect until 1 p.m., but was canceled early because wind speeds had decreased. However, areas of frost are expected in the valleys Monday night, and a frost advisory is scheduled from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday.

"Low pressure aloft will slowly move east today and result in a continued weakening of the winds," according to the weather service. "The low pressure system will leave behind a cold air mass which will result in areas of frost tonight in the valleys as temperatures fall to 30 to 35 degrees in many locations."

Forecasters said the frost in wind-sheltered valleys could potentially damage or kill sensitive vegetation.

Big waves were expected along the beaches as a large northwest swell develops Monday, and a high surf advisory is in effect until 2 p.m. Tuesday. Surf of 4 to 7 feet and sets to 9 feet will be possible south of Del Mar.

Forecasters said Tuesday would also be chilly, but a warming trend is expected to begin Wednesday.
