Crews had completely knocked down a wildfire near Barona Casino on Saturday. The blaze charred 171 acres.

As of Saturday morning, firefighters had the burn zone off Wildcat Canyon Road in the Lakeside area 100 percent contained, according to Cal Fire.

The fire erupted for unknown reasons near Akuunyaa Way shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday. The flames caused no reported structural damage while moving across brushy hillsides and ravines east of San Vicente Reservoir but left two of the personnel working the fire lines with minor injuries.

The blaze, dubbed the Wildcat Fire, threatened some back-country homes for a time, forced a closure of a stretch of Wildcat Canyon Road and prompted deputies to clear people out of seven homes in the southeastern reaches of Barona Indian Reservation as a precaution.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
