San Diego's Top Weekend Events: From Buskers to Ballet GUEST:Nina Garin, editor/producer, KPBS/Arts Calendar

This is KPBS Midday Edition. I'm Maureen Cavanaugh. He will not grow up but boy Kenny dance. On this weekend preview will hear about a Peter Pan belly that features a host of favorite characters with some dancing alligators and then an arts you will not want to miss out on. Joining me with all the details is Nina Garin. Welcome to the show. Hello. You were here to talk about Peter Pan but this is it a traditional version. This is a ballet version and put on by California ballet. It has so many characters that it does lend itself really well to a ballet. Who turned the story into a ballet? It was by Septime Webre. The director is a former dancer at Washington ballet so he's been bringing these creative pieces to San Diego. What kind of creativity can we expect? Dancing alligators and mermaids and have comity. Also some really pretty classic ballet variations. There will be tiger lilies and expect classic and fun modern ballet. Jared nelson is the force behind this ballet how long has he been at California ballet and how is the influencing it? He was brought in last season by Maxine. He's just shaking things up. He was a guy who did peers in ballet which is new choreography. These trying to make ballet more relatable to people. Peter Pan happen Saturday and Sunday at the San Diego Civic Theatre. Next we move onto theater week. I think I know what is but tell us exactly what that is. It is modeled after restaurant week where restaurants lower their prices to get people to come and check out new places. The theaters are doing the same thing offering discounts so that you can go out and see how much we have out in our theater world. They want people to come out and enjoy new things. What playhouses are participating? It is basically everybody. The beauty is that it is established places like the La Jolla Playhouse and regional theaters plus cabaret shows so it's great for families to go explore the theater. I know for restaurant week you cannot show up at a restaurant you need to make a reservation. How does it work for theater week is Mark It is the same. You have to go on their website and then you just click on the individual show and it reveals what the deal is. Some have 20% off and somehow buy one get one free. So it's very diverse. Is or anything in particular that you would recommend people go and try during theater week? There is a new show called sex with strangers. That is a good one and that is 50% off because it is previews and then I really love freaky Friday and that one is 25% off at La Jolla Playhouse. Remind us what freaky Friday is about. Freaky Friday is based on a book but then it was also made into a movie in the 60s and again in the 90s. It's about a mother and daughter who don't understand each other and then to magic they switch places and the mother is in the daughter's body and vice versa. This way they get a perspective about what the other when is going through and the troubles they face in they have understanding about each other. You brought us a song from freaky Friday. The song is after the mother daughter switched places and they are figuring out secrets. [ Music ] That is busted from the freaky Friday soundtrack. Continues this weekend and you can visit their website for more details. Finally the San Diego Spring Busker Festival is this weekend. This is when street performers from all over the country come to to Seaport Village and they perform. You can see jugglers and the people painted in gold, acrobats. You show up it is a free event but these are working performance so it is recommended to bring tip money. There is a separate event for adults question Yes. It happen Saturday night and that is more adult. They have DJs, drink specials and more adult entertainment. You will see like the swords in the fire. I've been speaking with Nina Garin. Thank you. Thank you.

This weekend brings a high-flying ballet, stilt-walkers and discount theater tickets.
