Navigating San Diego School Choice? There's A Map For That

GUEST:

Scott Lewis, editor in chief of Voice of San Diego

Transcript

San Diego parents now through Nov. 13 have the chance to apply to public schools outside their neighborhood that might be a better fit for their kids. It's called the "school choice window."

Families can apply to schools with a dual-language emphasis, an advanced placement focus or even arts and music.

The tough part is getting enough information to know which school is a good fit for your child. Voice of San Diego developed a map that may help parents navigate the process.

"This is our first release of a major project to organize and make sense of data available to San Diego parents," Scott Lewis, editor in chief of Voice of San Diego wrote in a description of the project. "In coming months, we’re going to organize it into a Parent’s Guide with several more features helping parents from Oceanside to San Ysidro understand their options and how to make informed decisions."

Lewis discussed the school choice map Wednesday on Midday Edition.
