Plan to control border calls for more agents, technology

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says the Secure Border Initiative is designed to control the Mexican and Canadian borders within five years.

The initiative calls for more border patrol agents, increased interior enforcement, new technology and quicker removal of illegal immigrants. It also seeks tougher worksite enforcement measures and to improve infrastructure along the border.

President Bush has said tougher border enforcement will go along with a guest worker program.

Meanwhile, San Diego Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter is introducing legislation aimed at strengthening border security. He's calling for a 2000 mile fence along the entire U.S. Mexico border and authorizing local police to enforce immigration laws. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
