Big waves pounded San Diego County's coast Wednesday. Lifeguards and surfers say it's the biggest swell in years. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has details.
Hundreds of spectators gathered on the cliffs in Encinitas to watch monster sets roll in. The crowds were five people deep above a popular break called Swamis.
Some hooted and hollered and others held their breath as a two-story tall wave built on the horizon and buried the pack of surfers. Dan O'Hallaran said it was the biggest wave he'd seen in his 25 years in San Diego.
O'Hallaran: "Big! Ha, ha, ha. I think it was a 35 foot face. 98 and 84 were the only comparable swells. I think this one may surpass that."
Lifeguards on jet skis plucked surfers out of the whitewash and ferried them to shore and two helicopters were on stand-by.
Guards cautioned beachgoers to leave this swell to the professional surfers. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
