San Diego City Councilman Scott Peters has proclaimed that the city is at the "dawn of a new era." He vowed yesterday to be more accountable to taxpayers and as president of the council under the new strong-mayor form of government, he presented his vision for San Diego. KPBS reporter Amita Sharma has more.

Peters acknowledged the multiple investigations into the city's finances, countless audit delays and that budget cuts have chipped away at public confidence in city leadership. But a change in that leadership with Mayor Jerry Sanders and a switch in how the city is governed to the strong mayor system offer San Diego a fresh start, Peters said. And he promised to refocus the council on the people's business.

Peters: "Today I stand before you with a promise to be accessible and accountable to my council colleagues and the taxpayers of our great city. I promise to be the peoples' advocate and to think about what's best for all of San Diego and to help lead our way."
