Long waits in the pedestrian lanes at the San Ysidro Port of Entry continue in part due to a computer glitch that is increasing the time it takes to screen tavelers' documents. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
Increased scrutiny of travelers' documents has been causing massive delays in the pedestrian and bus lanes during the last month. In addition to the extra time it takes to enter every traveler's information into the computer system, a computer glitch is adding thirty seconds per person to the screening process.
Multiply that by the 50,000 pedestrians that can pass through on a busy day, and it can create long waits.
Port official Adel Fasano says they're adjusting operations accordingly.
Fasano: "Certainly, we don't like to see wait times exceed an hour. So our managers are instructed to making adjustments to make sure that the traffic keeps moving."
However, pedestrians have been reporting lines up to three hours long.
Fasano says they don't know when the computer problem will be fixed. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
