The Old Globe Theatre gathered together its biggest supporters and high-profile patrons for a major announcement. KPBS theater critic Pat Launer has the story.
High drama in Balboa Park. The Tony Award-winning Old Globe Theatre just received the largest gift in its 70 year history.
Philanthropists Donald and Darlene Shiley contributed $20 million to the Globe's latest fundraising campaign, which they're calling "Securing a San Diego Landmark." The Globe plans to raise $75 million by its 75th anniversary, to expand their endowment, create a new education center and rebuild their second stage.
The Shiley donation is earmarked for artistic endeavors, and ensures that the Old Globe Theatre will always be called the Old Globe.
