About 2,000 students across San Diego County skipped classes for the second day Tuesday to protest legislation in Congress to crack down on illegal immigration. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.
Many students walked out of class and to Chicano Park where they listened to impassioned speakers and chanted Mexican civil rights slogans.
They waved Mexican flags and held up homemade signs urging the U.S. Congress to reject a house bill that makes illegal entry a felony and vote to allow illegal immigrants to become citizens.
Tobias Hernandez is a sophomore at San Diego High School. He says he came to the country illegally when he was two and his entire family remains undocumented.
Hernandez: "I am the future. I consider myself American. But I am Mexican. I want a change for my family. I want a future for my friends, for other people.
Students also protested throughout North County.
District officials say discipline for students who miss class will be determined on a case by case basis. Amy Isackson, KPBS News.
