Federal and local law enforcement officials arrested 10 people in San Diego County's South Bay region Thursday in connection with a cross-border drug trafficking ring. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

The investigation began eight months ago with a tip about an individual who was trafficking cocaine from Mexico to Chula Vista. Authorities say that lead them to a few more people involved with the operation, and then to the full organization.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Special Agent Frank Marwood says the group is associated with a larger Mexican drug cartel.

Marwood: "At this point I can't tell you which cartel they've had, but I can tell you one or more of the members has been associated in prior events with the Arellano Felix Organization."

One member who resides in Chula Vista is also a former intelligence officer with the Mexican military.

Authorities say the group trafficked marijuana, cocaine and meth. Authorities say the ring also stole credit cards and luxury vehicles which they used in Mexico. Amy Isackson, KPBS News.
