Tenet Healthcare says it will try to sell Alvarado Hospital to another operator, in hopes of keeping the facility open as an acute care facility. As part of a settlement with federal prosecutors, Tenet must either sell or close the hospital by next February. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

The CEO of Tenet Healthcare made the commitment in a letter to East County Supervisor Dianne Jacob.

In the letter, the official acknowledged that Tenet couldn't guarantee to find an operator to keep Alvarado open. But the CEO promised to work towards that goal.

That's good enough for Supervisor Jacob.

Jacob: It's the first good word that we've heard in terms of a positive response for Tenet that their intent is to sell the hospital to a first class operator that would keep it open as an acute care hospital with the emergency room.

Jacob says Alvarado is vital to East County. She says its closure would mean reduced access to care for the area's uninsured, and the loss of an emergency room. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
