A national effort to register Latino voters rolled into San Diego today. KPBS Radio's Andrew Phelps was there
Admirers of Ren n Almendar z swarmed the Latino superstar for autographs after a live broadcast of his syndicated radio show, "El Cucuy de la Manana." Loosely translated that means The Bogeyman of the Morning. Almendar z is leading a campaign to register one million Latinos to vote. During the show in Chula Vista, volunteers helped sign up about 150 people.
Campaign director Mercedes Ramirez wants to mobilize the silent mass of Latino-Americans.
Ramirez: "They are hiding in the cages, because they were afraid, and they think that their vote is not going to count. Because we are coming from countries that you cannot say they are voting for so-and-so political party."
The tour heads to Tucson next week. For KPBS, I'm Andrew Phelps.
