Sanders welcomes court's energy refund decision

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders is welcoming a court decision that brings energy consumers, including the city, closer to millions of dollars in refunds. KPBS Radio's Andrew Phelps has more.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders is welcoming a court decision that brings energy consumers, including the city, closer to millions of dollars in refunds. A Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling forces regulators to look at electricity price spikes before October 2001. KPBS Radio's Andrew Phelps has more.

Sanders says San Diegans suffered worst from soaring electric rates in the summer months of 2000. Now, six years later, Sanders says Californians are closer to getting back what they deserve.

Sanders: "The City of San Diego has done all Californians a service, since the significant share of the illegal transactions occurred in the summer months of 2000 and before. The city was the primary and loudest voice making this argument."

City Attorney Mike Aguirre says the average customer could enjoy substantial compensation, but that may be in the form of lower electric rates in the future. The city's starving treasury could also win back millions. Aguirre says he is sure Sanders could put that to good use. For KPBS, I'm Andrew Phelps.
