New school superintendent ready to take on 500,000 students, 600 schools

San Diego County's new school superintendent starts work on Monday. Randy Ward takes over the job vacated by Rudy Castruita who retired after 12 years as county schools chief. Ward becomes the highest ranking public education official in San Diego. He'll be responsible for the education of almost 500,000 students in more than 600 schools.

KPBS Morning Anchor Dwane Brown spoke with Randy Ward to get a better sense of who he is and where he comes from. Ward began talking about his family's early education growing up in a poor section of Boston.
