Chula Vista School District officials are pleased their students made steady gains on the California Standards Test. But educators are still concerned the statewide exam discriminates against English learners. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Chula Vista students outperformed many young people throughout the state on the standardized test. But district officials still believe the test is not a valid way to measure the skills of students who are learning English as a second language. Chula Vista is one of several school districts suing the state board of education to change the way the test is given. District spokesman Dennis Doyle says the state needs to adopt a new test that English learners can easily understand.
We've met all of the federal targets that the federal government has asked us to meet. So this isn't sour grapes on our part. We're just saying this is not a valid measure of how our English learners are in fact performing.
Doyle says many English learners have mastered significant concepts and standards. He says the students just haven't had time to master English. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
