A $1 million federal grant will help beef up security for San Diego’s transit system. MTS spokesman Luis Gonzalez says the homeland security money will be used to protect against terrorist attack or disaster against the system’s bus and trolley operations.

Gonzalez: That will mean including security around our systems, that will mean also changing and adapting our new technologies that are available for some of our transit system cameras that are already in place, adding new cameras as well and then beefing up our internal security procedures here around the MTS complex.”

Gonzalez says the money will buy behavioral identification software for the MTS surveillance cameras at its buildings and bus storage yards.  He says all of the grant funding will pay for equipment improvements and upgrades. Gonzales says more than 80-million riders use the bus and trolley system each year.
