The National Institutes of Health is giving San Diego State University close to $10 million to study the health of Latinos in the South Bay. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis had details.
Over the next six years, San Diego State researchers will be looking at health problems plaguing South Bay’s Latino residents. SDSU Professor George Talavera is leading the study. He says his team will try to understand and explain the so-called Hispanic paradox.
Their rates of diabetes, hypertension, obesity and high cholesterol, they have more of that than the general population. Yet their rate of heart attacks and heart disease is lower than the general population.
The NIH picked San Diego State and four other universities in the country to look at health problems affecting different populations of immigrant Latinos. The data will be used to produce the nation’s largest study on the issue. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
