Family, friends and city leaders celebrated the life of former San Diego City Councilman George Stevens Tuesday. Stevens spent eleven years representing Council District four. He died last week. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.
Speaker after speaker praised the 74-year-old Stevens’ passion for improving the lives of people in his district. They spoke of his fiery tongue, his role as a mentor and his humor.
Councilwoman Donna Frye said Stevens’ stories would have council members practically falling out of their chairs with laughter.
Frye: But I think probably the thing I will remember most about George is the fact that he had such a great passion for what he believed in. And there was nothing, there was nothing that was ever going to stand in his way.
When Stevens first ran for City Council in 1965, someone burned a cross on his Clairemont lawn. He lost that race but went on to win in 1991 and was forced out of office by term limits eleven years later. Amy Isackson, KPBS News.
