The sale of Paradise Valley Hospital in National City is raising concerns in the community. The facility has been a key part of the region’s healthcare safety net. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
The current owners of Paradise Valley Hospital say a string of financial losses prompted the sale. The hospital has struggled for years because a large number of its patients are on Medi-Cal or are uninsured.
Judith Yates is with the Hospital Association of San Diego County.
Yates: They see probably the largest population of the uninsured in the South Bay area. And also importantly, they have the largest share of the Mental Health Services System, seeing patients at both of their sites, Paradise Valley and Bayview.
Healthcare advocates say the safety net in the South Bay is fragile. The prospective buyers of Paradise Valley are pledging to keep the same level of services intact for at least five years. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
