Military, Businesses Vow to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The military and dozens of San Diego businesses are signing a pact to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote better environmental policy. KPBS Radio’s Andrew Phelps has more.

The Regional Sustainability Partnership is a diverse group -- a local cell phone maker, a janitorial supply company and the Navy, among others. Their goal is to promote alternative energy and reduce the region’s dependence on oil. The coalition encourages more recycling and less waste. Patti Krebs is director of the Industrial Environmental Association, which rounded up the coalition.

Krebs: So we think it is somewhat unique to San Diego. And we hope that it’s going to serve as a model in other regions. There are sustainability groups in other places. But I don’t believe there’s anything quite like we have developed it here.

Krebs says the agreement was a year in the making. The partnership will also team up with leaders in Baja California as well as Mexico’s equivalent of the Environmental Protection Agency. For KPBS, I’m Andrew Phelps.
