San Diego City’s Ethics Commission has slapped 10 members of City Boards and Commissions with fines. The fines are a sign the Ethics Commission is ramping up enforcement of the city’s conflict of interest laws. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
The fines are for failing to meet deadlines to disclose economic interests. The biggest fine of $1,500 is against Mary Zoeller, a member of the city’s Data Processing Corporation board, for her history of late filings. Michael Watkins of the Center City Advisory Committee will pay $800 for resisting reminders to file and then submitting his broker’s name rather than details of his investments.
The move is significant, following the passage of the managed competition initiative this week. Prop. C opens the door to more contracting out of city services to the private sector.
This enforcement action against volunteer members of community boards is a warning shot from the Ethics Commission to elected officials. Alison St John, KPBS News
