Move Over, Slow Down. That’s the gist of one of the new laws that may affect your driving habits. Under the law, when you approach an emergency vehicle or tow truck on the side of the road, you’ll be required to move out of the lane adjacent to the vehicle. When that’s not possible, drivers are required to slow down. Violators could face up to a $50 fine.
Another law that passed in 2006 makes it illegal to talk on a hand-held cell phone while driving. You don’t have to hang it up just yet – the law won’t take effect until July of 2008. But California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Fran Clader says they’re working to get the word out now:
Clader: It’s never too soon to start developing the good behavior and putting the cell phone down or switching to a hands-free type device that are becoming widely available these days.
One final driving-related new law: A measure that makes it illegal to either ride in the trunk of a car – or knowingly drive a car while someone’s in the trunk.
