Last weekend, the San Diego Catholic Diocese stunned worshippers with an announcement that 143 sexual abuse lawsuits against priests might force the church into bankruptcy. This afternoon, attorneys for alleged victims and the diocese have been in court-ordered negotiations to reach a settlement that could prevent the church from seeking chapter 11 protection.
