Supporters of a California bill that would ban smoking in cars when children are present hope the third time's the charm. State lawmakers have rejected the measure twice before. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
The previous version of the bill would have banned smoking in cars when children six and under are passengers. The new measure extends the ban to children up to age 17. What's more, the bill would apply even when cars are parked on private property. State Senator Jenny Oropeza is sponsoring the measure. She rejects the view that the bill is too intrusive.
Oropeza : I'm not talking about banning smoking in people's homes. But when it is in public view, I do believe that this is one of those issues where there is a public stake involved here.
Oropeza says her bill would help protect children from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Studies show children are especially vulnerable to it. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
