Law enforcement authorities in Tijuana have arrested four men who they say kidnapped an executive with the Philips company last week. Authorities say the leader of the group belongs to a kidnapping ring that made international headlines ten years ago. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has details.
Law enforcement authorities say the kidnappers snatched the executive from the parking lot of a well-known Tijuana business. Authorities did not release details. However, a Tijuana news source says he was a Mexican executive with Philips manufacturing.
Authorities say his family paid a $10,000 ransom to free the executive.
The phone calls to negotiate the payment ultimately led authorities to the mastermind Gladis Omar Iriarte.
They say he belongs to a group of kidnappers that grabbed a Japanese Sanyo executive from a company picnic in Tijuana in 1996.
The most recent kidnapping has provoked a wave of concern among many in Tijuana's manufacturing Maquiladora industry.
