The San Diego City Council has tentatively approved an ordinance that prohibits fires on beaches -- except in concrete fire rings provided by the city or in portable barbecues. Councilwoman Donna Frye says the action was needed to clarify existing laws governing fires on city beaches.
Frye : To prohibit people from doing exactly what Mr. Madaffer was just talking about: to bring their furniture down to the beach and literally -- they would light it on fire.
The ordinance was proposed following a reported beach fire at the Children's Pool in La Jolla that disturbed the area's harbor seal colony. Frye said the law was not about the Children's Pool, or the seals, but rather public safety at all city beaches due to the possibility that someone could step on hot coals buried in the sand.
