Sanders Lays Out Proposed Budget Points, Hundreds More Layoffs

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders laid out the basic elements of his proposed budget Monday. He touted the cost savings achieved by increased efficiency at the city, and announced hundreds more layoffs. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

The mayor stood before a fire truck at the city's fleet maintenance yard to illustrate where his cost cutting measures have saved money. The city's fleet maintenance has been centralized and streamlined -- which Sanders says will save the city $2.6 million annually.

Sanders : This process known as business process reengineering will result in $49.3 million in cost cutting during FY 08 alone, and $54.2 million in savings since I took office. Major savings will also be achieved through personnel reductions.

Sanders says his proposed budget calls for permanently eliminating 670 full time positions. About 340 of those will be vacant positions, the rest will come from departments like environmental services, and the waste water department.

Sanders says the cuts should not result in any reduction in services.  Alison St John, KPBS News.
