A new contract which is said to provide significant gains for union workers will be voted on this weekend by 65,000 Southern California employees of Ralphs, Albertsons, and Vons. Union representatives say the proposed contract includes wage increases and improves health care benefits. In 2004, a 141-day strike idled nearly 60,000 workers and cost grocery chains an estimated $2 billion. The previous contract created a separate tier of wages and benefits for new workers.
