Less than a year after tainted spinach caused an outbreak of E-coli, a produce company in Monterey County is recalling its spinach after testing positive for salmonella. The recalled spinach had been shipped nationwide. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
The Metz Fresh company says there are no reports of illness linked to its bagged fresh spinach. The company says it's recalling the produce after a single sample tested positive for salmonella.
Last fall, E-coli tainted California spinach killed three people and sickened more than 200. That triggered the state's produce industry to come up with new safety guidelines. The guidelines cover the growing, handling, and shipping of leafy green produce. The goal is to prevent crop contamination. The guidelines are voluntary, but nearly all California growers and processors have adopted them.
Critics say the government should issue mandatory food safety rules. A series of bills that would have regulated the industry and imposed state oversight failed earlier this year.
